Politicians want Tanjung removed from Indonesian Assembly
Leading Indonesian legislators have started calling for the suspension of Akbar
Tanjung as parliamentary speaker after his conviction for graft.
On Wednesday, a Jakarta court sentenced Mr Tanjung to three years prison for
misusing 4.5-million dollars in state funds.
He is also chairman of the former ruling party Golkar and one of the country's most
powerful politicians.
A moral imperative
Chairman of the People's Democratic Party of Struggle faction in the House of
Representatives, Roy Janis, says legislators now have a moral obligation to start
moves to suspend Mr Tanjung from his position as people's representative.
The PDIP, led by President Megawati Sukarnoputri, is the largest party ahead of the
Golkar party chaired by Mr Tanjung.
Another PDIP legislator, Pramono Agung, backed the call for Mr Tanjung's
suspension.
Mr Tanjung returned to work on Thursday saying he will continue to carry out his
duties as House speaker and Golkar chairman.
