Indonesian police to interrrogate al-Qaeda suspect in US
Indonesian police will travel to the United States to question an alleged senior
al-Qaeda operative arrested in Indonesia and now detained by American authorities.
Indonesia's security minister Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono says the team will try to
confirm Omar al-Faruq's alleged confession linking Indonesian cleric Abubakar
Ba'asyir to a South-East Asian terror network and a series of bomb attacks at home.
Singapore and Malaysia have identified Mr Ba'asyir and compatriot Riduan Isamuddin
- also known as Hambali - as leaders off South-East Asia-based Jemaah Islamiah, a
militant Islamic group linked to the al-Qaeda terror network.
Mr al-Faruq had also admitted in a CIA report that he was the brains behind the
Christmas 2000 bombings of churches in nine Indonesian cities that killed 18 people
and injured more than 100.
