Bombings in Bali
The bombing of nightclubs frequented by Westerners in Bali, Indonesia - as well as
bomb attacks against US and Philippines consulates in Bali - have highlighted the
growing influence of Islamist groups opposed to US and allied policy in the “war on
terror”.
Initial reports from Indonesian authorities state that 187 have been killed in the bomb
attacks, with hundreds more injured.
In past months, US officials have been critical of President Megawati Sukarnoputri for
delays in arresting Islamist extremists accused of having links with the Al-Qaeda
network.
But what are the policies of Islamist groups in Indonesia? How do moderate Muslims
in Indonesia react to the rise of extremist organisations?
On the anniversary of September 11, Asia Pacific's Tricia Fitzgerald prepared this
background report on Islamic organisations in Indonesia.
