Foreign terrorists in Indonesia
Indonesia's military chief says foreign terrorists have been involved in sectarian
violence in the Maluku islands and Central Sulawesi.
The brief, but candid comments by General Endriartono Sutarto are the clearest the
government has given yet about foreign terrorist activity in Indonesia.
He says the National Intelligence Agency has confirmed the activity.
No details on numbers
General Sutart says the foreigners have conducted attacks and trained and armed
local militants, but there's no proof they are linked to the al Qaeda network of Osama
bin Laden.
No details have been released on the number of foreigners involved, when they were
active or who they aided.
At least 7,000 people have been killed in Muslim-Christian clashes in the Malukus
and Sulawesi since 1999.
