No Al-Qaeda network found in Indonesia, says Army Chief
JAKARTA (JP): Army Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Ryamizard Ryacudu asserted no
intelligence information was so far available about the existence of an international
terrorist network like Al-Qaeda in Indonesia.
He was responding to a question from the press about the possible presence of
Al-Qaeda in Indonesia.
Ryamizard said he had never received any report about the presence of an Al-Qaeda
network in Indonesia. "No such terrorist network had been found while it was difficult
to predict that this would remain so in the future as terrorist networks had a tendency
to grow," he said as quoted by Antara.
The army chief admitted a series of terror actions had happened in the country, such
as bombings and other acts of violence, but they were all local in nature and
committed by local networks.
To fight terrorism, the army chief called for the increase of alertness and strong
intelligence activity. He also emphasized the importance of having an anti-terrorism
law.
An antiterrorism law, he said, was already in the process of being discussed among
various government ministries concerned.
