Police Reject Radical's Complaint
October 4, 2002 12:19 AM
Laksamana.Net - Radical Islamic cleric Abu Bakar Bashir's effort to sue Time
magazine for defamation suffered a major setback Thursday (3/10/02) when police
said they would not pursue his complaint as they have no authority to investigate the
case.
Bashir wants to sue the magazine over a report in its September 23 edition that linked
him to Osama bin Laden's Al-Qaeda organization, a series of planned attacks on US
embassies, and the bombing of Indonesia's biggest mosque.
National Police spokesman Major General Saleh Saaf said police headquarters won't
follow up Bashir's complaint, which was filed on Tuesday, because no crime took
place in Indonesia.
South Jakarta District Court in May threw out a lawsuit filed by Bashir against
Singapore for accusing him of terrorist links.
