Tanjung Calls for Day of Mourning
October 14, 2002 06:44 PM
Laksamana.Net - House of Representatives speaker and Golkar Party chairman,
Akbar Tanjung, has proposed the government announce a national day of mourning for
the victims of deadly bomb blast on the resort island of Bali.
"All this was the act of uncivilized people," he said Monday (14/10/02) when
inspecting the site of Saturday night’s car bombing in the tourist area of Kuta.
His call comes after Australia announced that it would hold a national day of mourning
next Sunday. Most of the 190 people killed in the bombing were apparently
Australians.
Police have questioned at least 27 witnesses in relation to the bombing and are sifting
through wreckage for evidence. They will soon be joined by experts from Australia, the
US and Britain.
Former president Abdurrahman ‘Gus Dur’ Wahid on Monday lashed out at
Indonesian security authorities, accusing them of not doing enough to prevent
incidents such as the Bali bombing.
He claimed the bombing might have been part of a scheme by a certain group to
seize power.
"Any race for power should be pursued in the proper manner. It must not victimize the
ignorant people, let alone innocent foreigners," he said.
Gus Dur said the high number of foreign casualties would worsen Indonesia’s
economic condition, especially the tourism sector.
He lambasted Vice President Hamzah Haz for having recently claimed that Indonesia
is free from terrorists.
"Determined actions are indispensable if the situation in Indonesia is not to worsen
because of such foolish talk," he said.
