The End of Laskar Jihad?
October 15, 2002 09:16 PM
Laksamana.Net - Reports are suggesting that Indonesia's best known radical Islamic
group, Laskar Jihad, has shut down its headquarters and disbanded.
State news agency Antara on Tuesday (15/10/02) said the organization's
headquarters in Yogyakarta province had been closed and all activities had ceased.
A source said at least 1,000 members of the group were being shipped out of Maluku
province, where communal fighting between Muslims and Christians has left about
9,000 people dead since January 1999.
Analysts say Laskar Jihad is seeking reduce its profile, apparently fearful of possible
crackdowns on militant Muslim groups in the wake of the weekend bombings that
killed 181 people in Bali.
Laskar Jihad sent thousands of fighters to the Maluku islands in 2000 to help Muslims
fight Christians. The organization also sent fighters to Poso, Central Sulawesi, and
has been blamed for some of the worst incidents of violence.
