National Police HQ Reveals Possible TNI Involvement in Maluku
Conflicts
TEMPO Interaktif, Jakarta: National Police headquarters (HQ) spokesperson Insp.
Gen. Saleh Saaf said on Wednesday (23/10) that some members of the Indonesian
Military (TNI) may have been involved in conflicts in Ambon, Maluku.
Saaf added that possible TNI involvement was based on testimony made by 13
members of a local group who have been named as suspects in the Ambon bombings
and are currently being detained at the National Police HQ in Jakarta.
He said the suspects admitted that they received support from TNI officials who are
strategy experts.
However, Saaf said that such testimony is not yet final, adding: "This is just one-side
testimony made by the suspects. So, we will investigate the case further."
Saaf added that the 13 suspects were considered as perpetrators in the Maluku
bombings that took place after the Malino II agreement.
According to him, these perpetrators have tried to turn Christians against Muslims in
Ambon.
Saaf declined to confirm these perpetrators’ involvement with South Maluku Republic
(RMS) organization.
"We must be wary about this kind of adventurer group," he said.
As reported earlier, the 13 perpetrators of the Ambon bombings have been detained at
the National Police HQ since October 20.
The police are still pursuing Berty Loupatty, the leader of the group, and three other
group members. (Dewi Retno – Tempo News Room)
