Somerset Naturalists Speakers Schedule

Mon., September 14, 2009:  "Different Shades of Wild".
Dr. Claus Holzapfel of Rutgers Newark, Department of Biological Sciences, will speak about the unique plant and animal communities found in urban 'wildlands' such as Liberty State Park and Rutgers' Newark campus.    (This meeting is on the 2nd Monday, instead of the usual 1st Monday)

Mon., October 5, 2009: "Iceland".
Holly Hoffman, Photonaturalist, will present a natural history tour featuring glaciers, geysers, birds and wildflowers of fabulous Iceland.

Mon., November 9, 2009:  "Sustainable Gardening".
Connie Kallas, Master Gardener, will demonstrate how to gradually transform a garden into an environmentally and economically sound oasis.  (This meeting is on the 2nd Monday, instead of the usual 1st Monday)

NO MEETING IN DECEMBER

Mon., January 4, 2010:   "Dancing Birds".
Joan Thuebel will warm us up with the unusual song-and-dance routines of the male Long-tailed Manakins of Costa Rica.

  Mon., February 1, 2010:   "The World of Trees".
Dorothy Smullen, Naturalist and retired teacher will show us families of trees found in the Eastern U.S.  and their tropical members and explain the features of leaves.  [lichens]

Mon., March 1, 2010: "Antarctica".
Philip and Becky Witt will show us furred and feathered creatures and spectacular ice formations found on our southern-most continent.

Mon., April 5, 2010:  "Meadowlands".
Jim Wright of the New Jersey Meadowlands Commission, will tell us the remarkable history of the Meadowlands and the nifty birds and critters found there.

Sun. May 2, 2010, Field Trip, Mark Tomlin, 7:30-11:30 AM, Zarephath (see "Field Trips" below)

Mon., May 3, 2010:  "The Lives of New Jersey Butterflies".
Patti Murray, Naturalist and Professional Photographer, will take us through their life cycle, from jewel-like egg to the gorgeous flying creatures we enjoy watching.

Field Trips 2009-2010

(Bring a lunch for AM trips if you wish.  Trips last for 2 to 4 hours, may be cancelled for rain or snow.)

September - October, 2009, 8:30AM: 
Chimney Rock Hawkwatch.  The Somerset County Park Commission maintains the platform and parking lot in Martinsville as part of the 715-acre Washington Valley Park [Map].  Hawk Counters at the site will help identify migrating hawks and falcons, best from mid-September through October.  Directions from Route 22:  Take Vosseller Ave.  north (uphill).  from Route 22, turn left onto Miller Lane.  Park in lot for Chimney Rock County Park. 

SATURDAY, MAY 2, 2009, 7:30-11:30AM: 
Mark Tomlin will lead us to where the birds are, rain or shine.  Directions:  Cross D&R Canal bridge off of Weston Canal Rd.  ½ mi.  NE of Manville Causeway or from 287, take Weston Canal Rd.  Exit, take left off ramp, go 2 miles to same bridge on right.  Park and meet behind the tower.  Call (732) 356-0102 x4204.  No rain date.

Library closings due to Weather or Events

The Somerset County Library has occasionally closed due to weather conditions.   Such decisions appear to usually be made in the afternoon (before 3 PM) compatible with businesses in the area.   Although the library tries to notify a member of the club this is not always successful.   If in doubt call the main number at the library (908-526-4016), if the library is closing early the recorded announcement would be changed.

The Library has a Library Calendar available online (one more thing to check).
The library now schedules Sept - Aug  in the same manner as most school and club calendars.
