Adam was our quiet, well-mannered gentleman. He brought his own special
humor to any situation. Adam’s first love was the Navy JR ROTC unit he was
in at school. Adam also loved the world of Law Enforcement. These were his
top two career choices.
The night of March 30,2000 forever changed our
lives. Adam spent Thursday afternoon at Cristas, his girlfriend’s house,
watching videos and eating dinner. That evening around 8:45 PM Jackie,
Cristas mother was taking Adam home, Less than 6 miles from her house
Jackie’s car was struck by a drunk driver traveling at a high rate of
speed. Jackie and Crista died instantly upon impact. Adam laid in the back
seat holding on to life. EMS had to cut Adam’s seat belt off him. Adam’s
grandparents whom he lived with became worried when he was not home at ten.
They went to Crista’s house and found no one there. They had seen the
wreck site and went back to check. When they arrived on the scene of the
accident and told them who they were looking for they confirmed Adam was in
the car and had already been transported to the hospital. They were then
told Jackie and Crista had died. It was 11:15 PM, when I got the phone call
from my mother. Telling me Adam had been injured. I don’t remember much
after that just that I was screaming and had fallen to my knees because I
knew it was bad. My husband, John and I grabbed up Adam’s sister, Reghan
and headed to the hospital. My parents were already there and the doctors
were busy working with Adam. It was about an hour before when known how bad
it was. The doctors said Adam had severe brain injuries and was paralyzed on
his left side both legs were broke and the artery in his left leg was
severed. Adam was then sent to ICU and the family was allowed to come and
see him. From 3 AM until 6:30AM my mother and I held Adam’s hand told him
how much we loved him and we would be there to help. I begged him to open
his eyes to just speak to us. That was never to come after emergency surgery
Friday morning to help relieve to pressure on his brain and repair his leg
the doctors told us he probably would not make it and if he did they would
have to amputate his left leg. For the rest of the day we stayed with Adam
telling him how much we loved him. I sang to him, I don’t want to miss a
thing by Aerosmith, one of his favorite songs. At 11:45 PM we were told Adam
was brain dead and there was nothing else they could do. We allowed Adam’s
friends from school to say their goodbyes and our family came in and hugged
and kissed him for the last time. After everyone left at 1:00 AM, My husband
and I held Adam has they unhooked the machines. I laid my head on his chest
so I could hear his heart beat just once more. It was 1:34 am when I felt
his last heartbeat. I looked up at my husband and started to cry. Adam was
gone forever. This was two weeks before his 15th birthday.
