The Qing, C’hing, or Manchu Empire banner used by China as a national flag from 1872 until 1890. A blue five-toed dragon reaching for the red Sun on a yellow triangular field. Like many flags made by hand before standardization, proportions and design details sometime vary. In fact no two flag references show the same design for this or the later variant. This representation is based on a hand embroidered example displaying exquisite hand stitching and fine detail. In 1890 the shape became rectangular while the basic design features were retained in slightly altered form. Prior to 1872 the was no national flag for China. Individual government officials and agencies had flags and banners in plenty.
