Andy's Film Journal for
The 26th Annual Toronto International Film Festival (2001)

August 30th, 2001
7 days to go and Counting

With the start of the film festival just a week away, I am starting to feel the excitement!

Spent the last 48 hours trying to read through the 300+ film descriptions and select a manageable list of films to choose from. Not a lot of must-sees in my opinion this year. Some interesting selections from the Davids, Mamet (HEIST) and Lynch (Mulholland Drive) and a few other established directors, but not much jumped off the page for me. Unlike some of my fellow festival attendees, I don't generally follow the buzz from the other festivals so I am not always up on what might be coming that is a "must-see" from a critics point of view.

I am fairly happy with my selections at this point, we'll see what the luck of the draw brings on Monday morning with the actual picks. After being in the dead last box of orders to be filled last year, I am figuring I can't do any worse...then again. We ended up in Box 33 this year, but haven't heard as of this posting what box was chosen as the random starting point. Apparently 11 boxes were filled even before the doors opened this morning with people dropping off their selections between Tuesday and Wednesday. With the random starting process the incentive to line up first thing in the morning is no longer there, so this year Don decided he could managed the drop for us and I went to work instead of the usual pilgrimage to lineup. Ahh, the passing of a tradition. Oh, well there is always Monday morning when we can line up for ticket pick-ups.

I know I've been at the festival too long when I am starting to give advice to others on getting initiated into the festival. I helped organize tickets for friends Mike and Ceri this year who had attended a handful of films last year. I'm also introducing my girlfriend, Rebecca to the festival this year. Here's hoping she enjoys it!

Until Later....
