Letter: Sooke Council is simply manufacturing consent
by George Butcher, October 2000

It is no surprise that the engineering consultants hired by the Sooke council favour discharge of sewage to the Strait of Juan de Fuca (Sooke Mirror, Oct 18) - What consultant would contradict the instructions of the boss?

In this case the boss is Sooke council with its track record of being cozy with a gaggle of would be developers wanting a cheap sewage outfall paid by the taxpayers.

At their peril, councillors are forgetting recent history and the dictates of our Official Community Plan.

In 1990, the Blackstone Corporation proposed to pay for a similar sewage outfall. At a large public meeting, hundreds of residents made it crystal clear that they did not want an outfall of any type going into the Strait.

From this meeting, came explicit language which was embedded into our Official Community Plan. Bylaw 1949 states "the application of on-site effluent treatment and disposal methods is obligatory. There shall be no discharge to fresh and/or marine waters."

Council has chosen to disregard regulation.

Mayor Ed MacGregor is gambling that you will fall for his assurance that it's only "treated" sewage. This time they even want us to pay for it.

The next step is what Sooke council calls the "public consent' period. The first public meeting is next week, Oct. 30, 4:30- 7:30 PM at the fire hall. Come and watch as they try to manufacture consent from residents that stopped the last outfall and haven't changed their minds.

A group of concerned citizens has formed to oppose the sewage outfall. We want to hear from you and welcome your involvement. You can make a difference!
