Let's have a sewer referendumAs if being subjected to three weeks of taxpayer funded pro-pipe propaganda dressed-up as a Sooke Sewage Study update wasn’t enough, the comments by councillor John Farmer in the February 21 issue of the News Mirror, that he wants the sewer to proceed so we can return to shellfish harvesting in the harbour and basin, leaves me flabbergasted. Is this the same councillor Farmer who voted to add 50 more mobile homes to an already sewage soaked section of Sooke River Road which drains into the same harbour that he wants to dig for clams in? The people who will benefit from sewers in the core area are the developers who will be able to increase density, which for them means increased profits, especially with the rest of us taxpayers footing the bill. If councillor Farmer truly believes in cleaning up the Harbour and Basin, let’s see him put forth a motion at the next council meeting to place a moratorium on all new development until the sewer system is complete. I know the chances of this happening are nil, but weren’t we sold incorporation on the basis that "we" would be able to control our own destiny. I guess we should have asked them to give us their definition of "we." The next time they have the dictionary out at the district offices they should also look up democracy. Give the people of Sooke what we were promised, a selection of options for sewage disposal and let us have our say in the only appropriate manner, a referendum. |
