Letter to the Sooke News Mirror, March 14, 2001

Sooke council should ‘do the right thing’By Joanne Cooper

As a newcomer to both Sooke and Canada I suppose some people would say that I should not be getting involved with something I don't understand, but I have always been a strong supporter of the right of the individual to have their view heard.

In the UK I have had the displeasure of watching the growth of indifferent and arrogant beauracracy. The belief that 'they know better' than ourselves what is right for us.

I am not an anarchist, I believe strongly in democracy which is why I agree with those of our community who are calling for the promised referendum on the Sooke sewer issue.

Without this referendum any decision made by the council would be fatally flawed and divisive. I am sure after all the heartache suffered by the community over the Silver Spray issue that the council would be eager to be seen to be wholly fair and democratic!

So I call on the council to do 'the right thing' and ask the people what they want. It is no use telling us that we 'elected you' and so should abide by your judgment, on such an important issue we have the right to have our voices heard.
