Keith Martin steps in Sooke council’s muck
Letter to the Sooke News Mirror, March 14, 2001
by Gail Hall
It is a fact that when one gets down and dirty, some of the muck lands on your friends.
MP Keith Martin found himself a tad mud-splattered Wednesday evening, compliments of Sooke mayor Ed Macgregor and his council.
The telling moment came after Dr. Martin proudly told those gathered for his town-hall meeting, that he was working hard to procure grant money for council’s sewer project.
Three well-spoken, thoughtful citizens let him know, in no uncertain terms, that he needed to rethink his position. Reminding him that his party stands for public participation, and champions the cause of referenda, they made it clear to him that he was standing in some of the muck delivered by mayor and council.
Always the artful dodger, he wiped off the muck, said he was led to believe that the community supported the initiative, and promised to meet again with the mayor.
Before he left the meeting room, he was fully advised of the arrogant, self-serving, and dictatorial manner in which our mayor and council have dealt with this issue.
If he is true to the principles he and his party espouses, Dr. Martin will not support the sewer initiative. He will stand instead for an honest, straightforward presentation of the facts, followed by a referendum. We expect nothing less from him.
