Everyone loses in sewage miscalculations
by Wendy Morton to the Sooke News Mirror, April 4, 2001

This is a story about Powell River.

In 1997 the Mayor and Council of Powel River decided to help the economy of the town by upgrading the Westview wastewater treatment plant. They awarded a contract worth $6.2 million.

When the work was done, it was found that there were 35 outstanding deficiencies. Some were corrected; some couldn’t be corrected. It is currently costing the taxpayers of Powell River a million dollars a year to pay for the upkeep of a sewage treatment plant that does not work.

Who pays? The taxpayers of Powell River.

What is happening now? The municipality is being sued for $2 million. They have spent over $8,000 in legal fees.

Who pays? The taxpayers of Powell River.

Could this happen in Sooke? How many miscalculations has the Mayor and Council made already that will raise taxes?

Who pays?

Who gains?

I don’t live in Sooke, I live in Otter Point, but I don’t want an outfall full of Sooke sewage washing up on the beaches of west Sooke because somebody made a mistake, because somebody made a miscalculation, because somebody cared more for money than for the environment or for the quality of life.

Who loses?

Everyone.
