Council disregards ethics in the conduct of peoples’ business
by Gail Hall to the Sooke News Mirror, May 1 2001.

The minutes of the Sewerage Study Committee of April 10, were accepted by Sooke council at their regular meeting on April 23.

The minutes included the following statement: "Schools do not pay capital (costs), but council could escalate O&M (operation & maintenance) sewer rates to recover a portion of the capital cost shares from schools."

Administrator Tom Day was asked if this was legal. His reply: "Sort of."

I asked Mayor Ed Macgregor and his council if this is how we do business in Sooke. The mayor did not reply. Not one councillor raised an eyebrow.

The tendency to disregard ethics in the conduct of the people’s business is becoming trendy in the Sooke Council Chambers.
