Outfall will result in more DFO closures
by George Butcher to Sooke News Mirror May 16, 2001

I was heartened to read that TSou-ke Nation is continuing its explorations into an alternative sewage treatment technology that treats wastewater as the resource it is and does not involve discharge into the ocean (Sooke News Mirror, May 9).

They are wise to hold that protection of the marine environment must be their primary concern. For too long, they have watched as shorelines have been closed to traditional harvesting of seafood, despite assurances that conventional wastewater treatment works just fine.

They have seen the map of DFO harvesting closures along the entire shoreline of Saanich Peninsula served by sewage outfalls. They know about the accidents at sewage treatment plants that cause raw and poorly treated effluent to reach the ocean. They have seen the recent TV footage of raw sewage despoiling Cadboro Bay because a sewage pipe broke.

The discharge of secondary treated effluent into Strait of Juan de Fuca off Reserve #2, as proposed by Sooke’s mayor and council, would bring on another DFO harvesting closure. They understand the risk that the Sooke outfall poses not only to traditional food gathering but also to future economic benefits from lucrative geoduck clam harvests and salmon traps. They are wise to be wary and to reach for non-polluting solutions that will be part of our future.

If only Sooke’s mayor and council could get their heads out of the past.
