Golf course land rezoning sucks by Norm Upton, Sooke News Mirror June 20, 2001 Congratulations to Mayor Ed and the boys! They’ve managed to remove the only piece of Sooke that has any visual appeal at all, and for what? They can’t possibly convince me that the golf course is the only place in Sooke that meets the needs of a seniors housing complex. One only has to walk up Grant Road to see huge tracks of land currently under ALR. These farms come up for sale all of the time and I’ll bet a dollar to a donut the price is a fraction of what we’ll end up paying for the golf course land. Not once do I recall hearing this council or mayor seriously looking into alternative locations. Don’t get me wrong, I think a seniors housing complex is an important part of any community. And I personally support having one in Sooke, but why do we have to lose the golf course? Maybe I’m just paranoid, but something stinks about this whole deal. I see developers making big bucks. I see Mr. Swinburson making big bucks and who knows else is lurking in the background. The only losers in this deal are each and every resident of Sooke. But, oh yeah, I almost forgot, we’re going to get a Par 3 course on what’s left. Who’s kidding whom? When Mr. Swinburson can’t make a buck at that either, he will be back asking for re-zoning to allow housing development; or even better, maybe he can sell it to the town for use as a sewage treatment plant. The way he maintains his golf course I’d say it’s already half developed. My congratulations to the two councillors who actually had enough kahoonies to say no to this deal - it sucks. I know as a small business owner in this town I’ve probably just lost a few of my highly-valued and all-too-rare customers, but this isn’t about individuals. And though you the reader may not feel this issue concerns you because you live in Saseenos, Kemp Lake or some other area not directly adjacent to the course, the bottom line is it’s yours -- not Ed’s and the crew’s. I think this council would have found it pretty difficult to get elected had they told us their true agenda -- make the bucks and the hell with what the people of Sooke want. I say it’s time people in this town make a stand and voice their disapproval, because as I see it the only people approving are those who stand to gain personally. |
