Sooke’s Businesses Should Pay for Sewers if they Want them. Letter by John Stephen to the Sooke News Mirror, September 17, 2002 Editor:
This is in reference to the Sept. 4’s editorial in support of sewers for Sooke. Your claims that sewers are needed to prevent health risks from faulty septic systems weakens your arguments. There have been no outbreaks of typhoid, encephalitis, hepatitis, dysentery or meningitis from sewage contamination in Sooke nor have there been any human fatalities arising from fecal coliform bacteria in locally harvested shellfish. This seems to be simply a scare tactic to mislead your readers based on unsubstantiated opinion. If Sooke businesses want sewers then they should have them and they should pay for them, but the rest of us shouldn’t have sewers forced upon us, we should be left with septic fields which, if properly maintained, will last a homeowner’s lifetime for a minimal cost. A sewer system imposed upon Sooke would cause a frightening tax increase for owners of small acreages, forcing them to abandon their holdings to developers who would soon reduce Sooke to a tedious gridlock of crowded neighbourhoods. Retaining a picturesque mosaic of hobby farms, large residential lots and subdivisions will ensure that our community continues to be visually appealing and healthy, something we should strive to maintain for our hometown whilst we still have that chance.
