Election doesn’t have to be popularity contest Letter from George Butcher to the Sooke News Mirror, November 13, 2002 This time the Sooke municipal election doesn’t have to be a popularity contest. This time, we know what the incumbents stand for and there are alternatives. The defining issue is sewage and your right to have a say. On this, the record of all current councillors is dismal. Without so much as a proper Liquid Waste Management Plan, they rashly jumped to the conclusion that only an expensive "big pipe" and an ocean outfall are the solution. Careful and cautious thinking would have revealed cheaper and more effective options. All of the incumbent councillors are willing to place a crushing cost burden on core residents - over $600 per year tax increase, plus hundreds more per year for maintenance, plus thousands for hook-up. Not one of the incumbent councillors is in favour of giving you a democratic vote in a real referendum on this wild scheme. Instead they offer a petition against works. Don’t be fooled - this is not a referendum. It’s designed to favour large landowners who stand to profit from sewers. Why vote for someone who doesn’t respect your intelligence? Fortunately, in this election there is a choice. The new candidates, OBriain, Morino, Upton and Dobres, state they support a real referendum and offer the chance to inject some new thinking. Don’t fall for popularity.
