Welcome to the SLUDGE REPORT This council is a disgrace! The worst fears of Sooke residents who so enthusiastically supported incorporation voted in the spring of 1999 have been realized - we have elected a financially incompetent council which -, to paraphrase an old barb repeatedly directed at the NDP government - doesn't have the ability to run a peanut stand. And we the taxpayers are the ones who will suffer with taxes about to spiral out of sight once the cost of the sewer system, so enthusiastically supported by council, is factored in. The headline on the front page of March 28 News-Mirror tells it all "Preliminary budget figures may see service cuts or tax increase". This crowd has only been in business for a year and a half and already they seem to have lost all control over the budgetary process at the same time feathering their own nests with some of the richest wages paid councillors in the CRD. It is unconscionable that this year we could see taxes increase by 5.21 per cent. The preliminary budget is 50 per cent greater than projected! The excellent editorial in this week's Mirror tells the story - thousands and thousands of dollars to hire consultants for sewers that nobody other than the developers, want... thousands more for consultants to carry out a traffic study when any competent teenager could have told them the same thing...an expensive fire chief hired when a veteran volunteer would have done the job at a fraction of the cost. Councillor John Farmer is fast becoming the "cranky councillor." He got increasingly irritated and sharp with questioners during the sewer open house and even had to later apologize to one taxpayer after the taxpayer wrote him a letter of complaint. Farmer who runs the Shoppers Drug Mart franchise in Sooke and lives in Otter Point, might prescribe himself a sedative because he is likely to faced with increasingly angry questions from irate residents as the sewer debate heats up.. But at least Farmer says something. Other councillors just sit there, no one even questioning the effect on taxpayers. The taxpayers of Sooke have no fiends on the council.
