Soonger's High School Days

  The golden era

As opposed to other school boards that have a separate junior high and senior high, us children in Windsor have K-8 then 9-13 (well, they're phasing out grade 13). So these are my years from 9 - grade 13 (also known as OAC).

In those fun-filled 5 years, I've taken some pictures as a visual aid to my already present failing memory. Also note, I'm leaving out non-incriminating photos to protect the underaged... (just kidding!) I've been on the up-and-up most of my life and why would I be dumb enough to take pictures of things that would get me busted?

  • Just a few years back...

Jonze b'day Olympium from the tower

A bunch of us (l-r), Jenni, myself, Jenna, Imran, Ann, Vince (in the back), Shawn, and Jonez, are celebrating the birthdays for those holding their cakes. Jonez and I are severely lacking sleep-- we had just come back from OFSAA and what the heck, why not celebrate a birthday?

Where is this (picture on right)? You're looking at the vantage point of a person about to take a header from a 10 metre board. OFSAA 1993 at the Etobicoke Olympium. Four world records broken in this pool-- lots of history there. It's a shame that I was not the one to break those records. The best I've personally done is a ninth place finish in the 100m backstroke (1:06.09).

    Mike buzz cut

As you can see, swimming played an important part of my high school days. Part of the tradition was to shave the heads of the rookies making it to OFSAA. I had dibs on cleaning up my cousin's sorry excuse for hair. Stopping midway through, I had to immortalize the moment. (My apologies to the cleaning staff at the Holiday Inn. We didn't exactly do a great job cleaning up all that hair in the bathroom!)

    prom pic

Fast forwarding to grade 13, here is a picture of my table at our prom. As you can see, someone must have caught my attention. I hope it was something worthwhile (probably not considering I know my classmates!) For your information: Jasmine, Arthi, Vince, Mike, Janet, Immie, Andrew, and the spotted boy.

    prom pic 1

Soonger with a pair of the more popular ladies of the graduating class of 1994-- Sonia (l) and Julia (r). Heard from the both of them recently-- Sonia is married; Julia has earned her honours arts & science degree from Queen's. Last I heard she's doing teacher's college @ Queen's. Time flies-- I can't believe it's been 5 years since this picture was taken. Feeling this sentimental means I'm getting old!

    post-prom

Like I said before-- a bunch of us went to my friend Vince's place after the prom. From what I remember, the music was on the crappy side so we left the Ciaciaro Club around midnight. There was some good times to be had that night-- a lot of nostalgia (reminiscing about our high school days), and the stark reality we'll be scattered all over the province when September arrives.

    valedictorian

The last order of business for any graduating class-- the graduating ceremony. My class was the last year that Vincent Massey S.S. held its grad at the Cleary International Centre. The view from that place is amazing-- overlooking the skyline of Detroit (with the world-famous Renaissance Centre-- the world headquarters for General Motors) and good weather-- it was a perfect day. Here's a picture of me doing the valedictory address to my class, friends, and family. It was a proud moment afterwards when I presented my mom with a basket of flowers (the 'tradition' for the valedictorian to present to his/her mother).
