Brief History of Southwell Orchestral Society

Early in 1985 at the instigation of John Rose meetings commenced
in Easthorpe Hall, Southwell.
We currently meet in the W.I. Hall (See maps for location)

This originated from a scratch orchestra which had been supporting
Carols for Everyone since 1981.

Nine players turned up to the first session.

All were upper part instrumentalists.

There was no entry requirement, just a desire to make music.

In the early days one or two "Open House" concerts were given for family and friends.
This is still a feature of the orchestra today.

The Orchestra has grown since its early days and now boasts a permanent membership of 40 players.

New players are always welcome.

The current membership includes a number of professionals who come and go according to work or other commitments.
