Gumbo: An Anthology of African American Writing
What a wonderful collection of African American Literature! Over 70 authors came together to create this compilation of short stories, many of which are actually excerpts from a novel. Each selection gives the reader just a small taste of the writer’s style and is just enough to whet your whistle. The most impressive part of this project, referred to by many as a "literary rent party", is that proceeds will benefit the Hurston/Wright Foundation, an organization that gives annual financial awards to novelists, nonfiction writers and students. E. Lynn Harris and Marita Golden are the editors of Gumbo and they are to be commended for a job well done. Contributing authors include Bernice McFadden, Bebe Moore Campbell, Kenji Jasper, Elizabeth Nunez, Yolanda Joe and Victor D. Lavalle. This anthology is an excellent way to sample work written by your favorite author and also to experience the talent of the new and up and coming writer.

The Secret Life of Bees
The Secret Life of Bees is an interesting story of l4-year-old Lily, a white girl raised by Rosaleen, her African American nanny. After Lily’s mother is accidentally killed, Rosaleen steps in as a maternal figure. Lily’s father is abusive and neglectful and truly does not seem to love Lily at all. Following a racial disturbance in the l960's Lily and Rosaleen flee to a neighboring town where they take up residence with three sisters who keep bees. The interaction and the relationship of Lily to these women of a different race, and their belief in the healing power of honey develop as an important theme in the story. Eventually, Lily learns more about her mother while forging a strong bond with the sisters. A sweet, heartwarming book.
