Soul in the city

Review of soul in the city 07:11:00

MBRYO'S dancers performing PRINCE'S "SEXY MOTHER F****R" choreographed by MIGUEL DOFORO & LISA BRANNAN.

CHANTEL (left) with her very own version of MUSTANG SALLY, a kind of young reborn TINA TURNER with enough fire in her blood to set the stage alight and warm the hearts of the audience, they loved her, certainly a good prospect for the future.
HAYLEY KINKADE (right), also known as STRESSEN CHI, a lovely 12 year old girl who oozes confidence with every note she sings, HAYLEY entered the stage and sang that classic old song "SUMMERTIME" then without so much as a pause sang "SOMETIMES" the switch from old classic song to modern new song was unnoticeable as she quickly adapted from one to the other. HAYLEY is tall in person and tall in stature and will continue to grow taller, just keep your eyes open for the name STRESSEN CHI and don't blink.

MARGARET OLOROGUN (GEM) who sings with the LOVE & JOY GOSPEL CHOIR here in LIVERPOOL, performed her first solo spot at SOUL IN THE CITY. Only one word can describe GEM'S voice and that is Perfect with a capitol 'P'. This young woman is an angel in disguise, who drew the audience to her halo like a huge magnet, after singing a few verses of acappella, except for her angelic voice you could have heard a pin drop. She was like a pastor performing her sermon to the masses, as soon as she sang her last note of acappella the building erupted into wild applause only to be silenced by GEM herself singing "ANGEL OF MINE" which also received huge applause. This woman is gospel and until someone notices her and records her voice then R&B is missing a real GEM of an ANGEL.

  GENIENE MONOHAN (right)
GENIENE is a young woman full of ambition who not only danced on the evening as part of MBRYO, she also sang. She has a lovely voice and given the fact that she only decided to do a new song to her, "YOU'RE THE ONE I WANT", the day before the show and had only one day to learn it, she done extremely well. She wasn't too sure about the song before she went on stage and was very nervous about forgetting the words, but in true professional style she soldiered on and executed the song in such a way that even though you could tell she was nervous she covered it up well. GENIENE has all the aspects of a performer, the looks, the voice and the ambition to go and make something of herself, we wish her all the luck in the world.
To the top MICHAEL SIRMONS (left)
When MICHAEL came on stage he looked kind of like a young LUTHER VANDROSS type of performer and to everybody's amazement he sang MACIE GRAY'S "I TRY" exactly like the woman herself. He sang this song brilliantly but you couldn't help but to hear the real MICHAEL coming through in the chorus lines and this sounded even better. He has a wonderful souly voice which he should use more often. He has the ability to become a good R&B performer and he should take this opportunity now while he's young to further his career.

O.I.C I repeat O.I.C. These guys were the real deal, if you like rap & beat box stuff then look no further, the boys are here. I know personally that there were people in the audience that were not too fussy on rap, until the three wise men attacked the stage and truly converted their thoughts. If you are looking for a rap act then book them now while you still have the chance, these boys are electric. I personally thank them for the SOUL IN THE CITY rap song they sang upon entering the stage (total respect). These guys had the audience rocking in the aisles, I for one would put all my money on them becoming a huge success. If you want to have a sneak preview of them then go along to KIRKLANDS, Hanover Street, LIVERPOOL of a Thursday, and watch them perform at the playground. Well done boys, I look forward to seeing you's at the top.
  JUDY WILSON (left)
Although JUDY is not an amateur, she came along to our amateur night to perform alongside some of the acts she'd been teaching vocals to. JUDY has that gruff souly R&B voice that you'd die for, she definitely knows her stuff, and it showed when she had all of the men in the audience eating out of the palm of her hand. She has the looks and charm to entertain any audience and in my view should be performing for a living, there is definitely a space for JUDY in the music scene and the sooner she fills that space the better.
To the top LISA TOMLINSON (right)
This young woman proved to us once again what singing talent exists in Wales. She waltzed on stage and opened up with "HOW COULD AN ANGEL BREAK MY HEART", a song which she once sang for her father after he had been seriously ill. You could sense the meaning and feelings in the words she sang. After the interval LISA returned to sing ROBERTA FLACK'S "KILLING ME SOFTLY" and only ROBERTA herself could have sang it better, the audience acknowledged this and applauded her wildly, for a singer who lacks personal confidence she had us all fooled.

MBRYO'S dancers performing the opening of the second half to SISQUO'S "THE DRAGON" choreographed by MIGUEL DOFORO & LISA BRANNAN who put a lot of hours and hard work into the dance routines which were absolutely brilliant. I must mention a big thank you to MIGUEL'S mum DEBBIE TAGOE who made two sets of costumes for thirteen dancers on her own and they looked fantastic.

  ALEX MCGUFFIE
This young lady had never sang live or even sang at all until the SOUL IN THE CITY concert. ALEX was part of MBRYO'S dancers and one day at rehearsals approached me and asked if she could sing on the night. I told her that we had enough acts already, which was the truth. A couple of weeks later she asked again if she could sing, I told her (just to pacify her) that I hadn't heard her and with that she sang for me on the spot. I immediately told ALEX that she had better go and get her music, she has a very different voice which is very distinctive to only one person. At one point she felt she couldn't go on stage and perform in front of four hundred plus people, but she did and she was brilliant. Once the music started she was rockin' from side to side and pacing the stage to KEITH SWEAT'S "TWISTED". Out of all of the voices heard that night, ALEX'S always rings the loudest. A unique voice is an advantage in the music world and if she uses that advantage ALEX will definitely go far.
To the top UNIQUE
LYNDSEY, PHILLIPA & KIMBERLEY, three young girls who have been practising vocals together for a couple of years and until rehearsals had not actually used microphones. So they didn't really know what they sounded like until now, and they sounded pretty good to me and the rest of the audience who started stomping their feet and clapping when they opened up with a few verses of acappella and then sang "NO SCRUBS" accompanied by three male dancers. These three young girls stole the hearts of the audience who loved every minute of their performance. In parts of their act it was obvious that they had little mike experience but that was minor compared to their overall performance, practice makes perfect and they need little practice.

NATHAN, a young rapper with loads of potential. This young man rapped like a rapper should, quick and audible. He knew his stuff and he knows it. NATHAN, although a bit stage shy came across well, his performance would have improved 100% if he had added a bit more movement to his act. This is something he should work on, but let's not let that take anything away from his rapping, NATHAN is a rapper and he proved that on the night.
MBRYO'S dancers with choreographers MIGUEL DOFORO & LISA BRANNAN (centre). MIGUEL & LISA are both very talented young people who are dedicated to what they do and what they do, they do best.

To the top This is me, RUSSELL TAGOE, on stage for the finale with all of the performers. Obviously by the look on my face I enjoyed myself and I can assure you I did. This was just the first of many SOUL IN THE CITY nights and I look forward to them all. Many thanks to everybody that took part and to the sponsors, LEWIS'S, A TOUCH OF STEEL, CHILLIES 1 & 2, THE BURO & last but not least THE TRAINING STATION, thank you once more and I'll see you all again when you are all famous, RUSSELL TAGOE, MBRYO PROMOTIONS.
