How to Drive a Steam Locomotive

(That is, one of these).

1. Drop the reverser over into full forward gear (unless you want to go backwards - look, do I have to explain everything?).

2. Check for signal, sprag and stick.

3. Open the regulator slowly, to avoid slipping.

4. Notch up when the train is moving at a reasonable speed. Remember that a locomotive with Stephenson valve gear will still pull in mid-gear due to the double lead.
