That's one of the typical sights and colors of Dublin: Gray walls built everywhere.

Especially depressing gets this during the winter when, due to the cold humidity, it hardly gets bright during daytime and at night yellow street lamps loose the battle to fight the misty dark.
No wonder the favorite pastime of the Irish is to get drunk. The only other two alternatives are either to emigrate or to commit suicide.

 

But there are other areas than the city center north of the Liffey ...

... for example the place where I lived: Raheny (forms together with Artane and Harmonstown Dublin 5)

In Raheny my residential area was called Bettyglen (adjacent Watermill Road); there I lived in 17 The Court :

That's the apartment block, "detached houses" (they say)…

… and that was the view out of my bedroom.
