He married twice. He married Nancy M. Chandler in Reed Creek Dist, Franklin (Hart), Co, GA, August 17, 1843. Nancy was born in Franklin Co, GA March 18, 1824. She was the daughter of Henry Farmer Chandler and Frances 'Fannie' Witherspoon Harbin. Nancy died April 15, 1852 in Paynes Creek, Hart Co, GA, at 28 years of age. Her body was interred in Reed Creek, Baptist Church, Cem, Hart Co, GA. He married Martha Jane Chandler in Franklin Co, GA, September 16, 1852. Martha was born in Franklin Co, GA December 12, 1825. She was the daughter of Henry Farmer Chandler and Frances 'Fannie' Witherspoon Harbin. Martha died September 20, 1899 in Paynes Creek, Hart Co, GA, at 73 years of age. Her body was interred in Shoal Creek, Baptist Church, Cem, Hart Co, GA.

Peter Early Burton, the 2nd child of John and Polly Hudson, was born in the Reed Creek log cabin of John Burton.

4 ii. Joseph J. Burton was born in Franklin Co, GA September 1845. Joseph died September 9, 1861 in Richmond, Va..⁽²⁹⁾ His body was interred in CSA Cem, (Hollywood), Richmond, Va.

Pvt. Joseph J. Burton enlisted in Co. H, 15th Regiment, Georgia Vol. Infantry on 13 July 1861 at the age of 16. His father described him as having blue eyes, dark hair and 6 feet 7 inches tall. Joseph died of typhoid just 58 days later in the CSA hospital, Richmond, Va. His father, Peter E. Burton, filed letters of Administration with the Hart Co, Ga. probate court and subsequently collected $96.46 in back pay. Joseph is buried in plot G-57, CSA enlisted section, Hollywood Cem., Richmond Va. In 1991 a veteran's grave marker was ordered to be placed at the grave site by Joseph C. Burton Jr. , his name-sake and great nephew.

5 iii. Martha C. 'Mattie' Burton was born in Franklin Co, GA October 28, 1849. Martha died December 19, 1919 in Franklin Co, GA, at 70 years of age. Her body was interred December 21, 1919 in Shoal Creek, Baptist Church, Cem, Hart Co, GA. She married James Henry Cobb in Franklin Co, GA, January 12, 1893. James was born in Pickens Co., S.C. ??? December 13, 1854. James died September 10, 1896 in Hart Co, GA, at 41 years of age. His body was interred in Shoal Creek, Baptist Church, Cem, Hart Co, GA. \i0

James Cobb Married first Elizabeth Bruce-b. 16 Oct 1864, d. 2 Jun 1890; children ,Samuel Albin - Lula T. - Charles Henry Grady and Flora Cobb. No children by Martha C. Burton. James, the son of J.W. Cobb of SC, was the brother of Cecelia Cobb who married Mattie Burton's brother John Farmer Burton. No children from this marriage. James Cobb married first Elizabeth Bruce-b. 16 Oct 1864, d. 2 Jun 1890; children ,Samuel Albin - Lula T. - Charles Henry Grady and Flora Cobb. James, the son of J.W. Cobb of SC, was the brother of Cecelia Cobb who married Mattie Burton's brother John Farmer Burton. James Cobb was born 13 Dec 1854 and died 10 Sept 1896. He is buried at Shoal Ck Bap Ch Cem, Hart Co, Ga. His will left 1/5th to Mattie and the remainder equally to his four children by his first wife.

7 v. Sarah Ann 'Sallie' Burton was born in Paynes Creek, Hart Co, GA April 19, 1853. Sarah died April 9, 1932 in Hart Co, GA, at 78 years of age. Her body was interred in Shoal Creek, Baptist Church, Cem, Hart Co, GA. She married Joseph Charlie Walters in Franklin Co, GA, October 30, 1870. Joseph was born in Franklin Co, GA October 30, 1844. He was the son of Elijah Walters and Caroline Cawthon. Joseph died June 30, 1905 in Franklin Co, GA, at 60 years of age. His body was interred in Shoal Creek, Baptist Church, Cem, Hart Co, GA. 8 vi. Frances 'Fannie' Burton was born in Paynes Creek, Hart Co, GA September 18, 1854. Frances died August 1, 1898 in Franklin Co, GA, at 43 years of age. Her body was interred in Shoal Creek, Baptist Church, Cem, Hart Co, GA. She married John Lewis Jackson in Franklin Co, GA, November 14, 1871. John was born in Franklin Co, GA November 30, 1850. He was the son of Joseph Sr. Jackson and Nancy Barton. John died August 1, 1898 in Franklin Co, GA, at 47 years of age. 9 vii. Eveline 'Eva' Burton was born in Paynes Creek, Hart Co, GA August 17, 1857. Eveline died February 11, 1943 in Hart Co, GA, at 85 years of age. Her body was interred in Shoal Creek, Baptist Church, Cem, Hart Co, GA. She married Willam Isom Maret in Franklin Co, GA, January 30, 1873. Willam was born in Franklin Co, GA July 23, 1849. 10 viii. Thomas H. Burton was born in Paynes Creek, Hart Co, GA December 19, 1858. Thomas died November 14, 1904 in Hart Co, GA, at 45 years of age. His body was interred in Shoal Creek, Baptist Church, Cem, Hart Co, GA. He married Marie Morris in Franklin Co, GA, circa 1895.

Thomas Burton served as Hart Co. Treasurer- an elective office. It is believed that Tom and Marie had one child who was stillborn.

11 ix. Nancy 'Nannie' Burton was born in Paynes Creek, Hart Co, GA December 3, 1861. Nancy died December 1, 1935 in Atlanta, Ga., at 73 years of age. Her body was interred in Lavonia City Cem, Franklin Co, GA. She married James A. Cook in Franklin (Hart), Co, GA, December 9, 1892. James was born in Franklin Co, GA February 2, 1865. James died October 2, 1938 in Atlanta, Ga., at 73 years of age. His body was interred in Lavonia City Cem, Franklin Co, GA. James's occupation: Salesman. (See James A. 13 xi. Susan 'Susie' Burton was born in Paynes Creek, Hart Co, GA October 1, 1865. Susan died March 21, 1911 in Hart Co, GA, at 45 years of age. Her body was interred in Shoal Creek, Baptist Church, Cem, Hart Co, GA. She married William F. White in Hart Co, GA, October 16, 1887. William was born in Franklin Co, GA October 8, 1862.
