1 - Aerial Shot of Gonaives. In the Upper right hand corner there is a lake, with a road leading to it.
This lake is new, it was created by the flooding. The road is Highway 1, the only highway in Haiti, which
had to be diverted around the lake. The lake is on top of a farming area.
In the lower area the green is all the topsoil that has been washed out to sea. This has harmed the fish
population, many locals are fisherman
On the left is the city of Gonaives, formerly population 250,000
At one time after the hurricaine almost 70% of those living had to leave, though some are coming back
In the upper part of the picture you can see the mountain that the water and mud came down, the water
from the sea also rose up from below
This happened in the middle of the night, and it crested in less than half an hour
At nine feet (above the street, up to 12 meters overall)
Most of the buildings in Gonaives are one story.
Almost 3000 people died.
2 -The dusty road to Gonaives.
3 - Hands holding on during the bumpy ride
4 - Arriving in Gonaives was a little tense, we brought two truck loads of people
because the last time Phil came he was mobbed and almost didn't get out
5 - A long line of dump trucks to haul mud out of the city
6 - The Disney Characthers with Haitian-syle physique are usually amusing
However their reflection from this Kindgergarten buried in mud and water is a sad
echo of what happened here.
7 - A broken wall, and a poster for a crusade. The town was covered with thousands of them.
This really angered me. Someone made a good point, the Haitians have great preachers, they don't
need some big ego white guy to come in and preach. The amount of money he spent defacing the city
(the posters were glued onto the rubble so they couldn't be torn off) was appalling.
8 - Two months after the flood, side streets are still covered in feet of mud and/or water
9 - Maxim points to the water line
10 - Debris from the water is caught on barbed wire on the top of walls, and powerlines.
11 - This is the mountain the water came rushing down, turning the street into a river.
12 - In this house live several children who lost both parents to the flood.
13 - These young men cornered me and asked me what I was doing there. They showed me their starving
baby sister and asked me for help. I'd been told that if I showed anyone money I would start a riot
so I told them I couldn't help. They showed me her bulging tummy. And I told them I was trying to
get help, took a picture, and left...just like all the other white people do.
The kids in this neighboorhood lost 250 of their friends and family members.
14 - In fairness, this child is crying because I tried to talk to it, not because of the flood
15 - Many souls climbed this ladder.
16 - Picture by Phil Snyder
17 - Picture by Phil Snyder, In this field was an entire village. Most of the poor people
in these villages outside of town live in mud/thatch houses. Only those who are more well to
do live in concrete houses. This is why the village washed away completely.
On the video Luke is making you'll hear stories the villagers tell of
of house after house being swept away with people inside. This area was literally a river during the flood
homes, crops, livestock, vehicles, concrete walls and people were all swept away.
Interesting fact: The Haitians build concrete burial chambers almost the size of their houses.
Honoring the dead is Very important to them, all the more reason to remember Gonaives.
18 - Still a proud warrior of a man
19 - This is the top of a wall hanging from a piece of rebar. The rest was blasted away.
The glass bottles are set in concrete and broken off to prevent people from climbing over
20 - Orphans of Gonaives
