After years of dealing with monolingual Brits, Abigail was novel! She
was tall. But more importantly, she spoke Mandarin. It's one thing to be
able speak 5 European languages, all of which derive from the same root.
But for a Westerner to learn Mandarin: Wow!! Not only did she speak it,
she worked with it!
She was one of my earliest friends out in Hong Kong. One year I remarked that our friendship was one of the few stable things in the ever-changing world that was Hong Kong. She had a couple of jobs in Hong Kong, and ended up in Hongkong Bank - truly a woman who has found herself out here. For a while, she was wondering why she was an International Economist with HSBC when that was not her background. Proof that if you have the brains, and the thinking skills, you should be able to do most things! Currently in New York doing her PhD - and yes, that's in Economics.. . I wonder who's heart she's breaking now... |
