Wai Kin

What does one say about one's oldest and closest buddy? There's nothing to describe him apart from saying what he is: my oldest friend.

Kin & I on an open top bus in Hong Kong. 1995

We met some time in Form 1: we were both 13 then. 17 years later, we are still friends. He has been with me in my travels down my life journey certainly: when we used to write to each other once a week. Now, it's not that frequent, but we still do natter on the phone and the Net. Amazing that we've kept in touch throughout all these years, throughout all my meandering round the globe.

We've done the usual crazy things together: gone on trips, holidays etc. We studied some subjects together for our "O" levels. We laughed, we cried, we never yelled at each other, but spent many an hour sulking/pouting. We grew up together.

He's now working with Accenture, being exploited to the hilt as US firms are wont to do. But he is enjoying it and that is what's important.

If he were not in such a peripatetic job, I honestly think he will be one of the reasons why I would return to Kuala Lumpur. As it is, few of us know where he'll be at anyone time.  Then again, soon after I moved down to Singapore, Wai Kin transferred to Singapore too.  In a sense the transfer only formalised what had been happening for years, as he had spent the prior few years commuting down to Singapore on Mondays, and returning on Fridays.

Anyway.  He's got his car, his two dogs... yes, looking very settled!
