"The Church of England's ASB Evensong is... dire!" |
It must happen so often in life: we meet someone, and after a few moments realize that one would like to get to know that someone better, only to discover that she or for that matter, he, is leaving town. I mean, the ships did not pass in the night - just hailed each other.
Luke and I met in the porch of St John's Cathedral. It
was after Evensong. It was pouring. He and I waited for the
storm to abate. We struck up a conversation and ended up sharing an
umbrella, and a dinner. He was leaving Hong Kong the next day, after
having spent the year teaching English. He scribbled down his
address before we parted ways.
One year later, after a number of e-mails and letters later, we met up again when he came back for the Hong Kong handover. |

In 1999, I went over to visit him, down in Nashville,
Tennessee. Many wondered why I wanted to go down to the South, but
hey - I've long since realised that the bulk of my holidays are now not
really holidays: more like visits to catch up with good friends. Well. Luke has since finished his MD, and in the meantime, has worked with flying eye doctors in Morrocco, with native American Indians down the Grand Canyon, and with Kenyans somewhere overlooking the Great Rift Valley. This is one man who has travelled far and wide. Still - I do believe the next stop for him is San Francisco... Hope to have more opportunities to catch up with him there. |
