Lube, lube, lube, you must lube.
Very few people produce enough natural lubricant (saliva, vaginal secretion, mucosa, you name it) for anal sex. Penetration without proper lubrication will usually result in pain, friction (not the good kind), and irritation. It will not be enjoyable, and over time there's a real risk of injury.
So get hip already.
Safer sex tips
By "safer" we mean protection against AIDS and other venereal disease.
- Do not use oil-based lubricants
- This includes anything "food", such as vegetable oil, Crisco, or margarine. All these products destroy condoms and weaken the internal tissues.
- You must use condoms
- Even if yr partner can "probably" be trusted, do you really want to worry about this for months afterward? If they won't use condoms with you, chances are they didn't with their last sexual partner either.
- Please note Nonoxynol-9 does not by itself protect against AIDS -- it is only considered "safer" when used to enhance a barrier method like condoms.
- condoms + lube = safer
- condoms + lube w/ Nonoxynol-9 = even safer
- no condoms + lube w/ Nonoxynol-9 = not safe
Lube preferences
Thin, watery
- Astroglide
- super-slippery even in tiny, invisible amounts. Favored by porno actors
Viscous, gooey
- ForPlay
- available in adult supply shops and smut stores. "Endorsed by Family Planning organizations", whatever that means. Water soluble.
- Wet
- these guys got in trouble once for having less Nonoxynol-9 than claimed -- low enough to be ineffective against for AIDS prevention. Presumably, they've corrected this by now. Properties and availability same as ForPlay.
- J-Lube
- available in veterinary supply stores. Best way to make tons of extra-gooey lube on the cheap. Favored by the fisting crowd. Yellow-ish color. Challenging to wash off.
Semi-solid
Preferred for being easy to control, not runny. Some people find this type too dry, but it liquifies with body heat -- just be sure to apply a lot. And reapply frequently if yr going at it for more than a minute.
- KY Jelly
- available in most drugstores and big supermarkets, some find it too dry.
Don't be a rube -- apply some lube.
