Uromastyxs: The Greatest Pets

RAMIKA NANNIE CLEOPATRA UROMASTYX

I have been the owner of two beautiful uromastyxs. I know a lot about these wonderful lizards but I haven't got the time to answer everybody's questions about them! So I have made my own basic care sheet for all of you to use. This is not all the best or the exact right thing for your lizard, since each lizard is very different, but this might give you a basic idea of what to get for your lizard.

FOOD: Fresh green peas and lentils, hibiscous flowers, zuccinni flowers and make sure you put CALCIUM on your lizards food or force feed them a paste of calcium/vitamins because your lizard could devolp a vitamin defenecy where her hands and feet shook.

CAGING: I have a 40 gallon tank for my 15 inch lizard, however you should get a cage much larger, (I bought mine when she was only 7 inches and I didn't think what would happen when she grew) like a 60 gallon. This ranges from $100-$150. I use a sand substrate, but I also recommend large rabbit pellets. Sand is hard to clean but it is cheaper. In her cage she has large pieces of bark to climb and sleep under. Rocks are also good but I don't know where to get them.

LIGHTING: This is the most important thing of all! Your uromastyx must stay at 100° during the day and around 85° at night!!! I highly recommend a ceramic heater that you can get at Petco for around $40 that will last a long time rather than those horrible black lightbulbs. For the day use any brand of Ultra-violet 100 watt light bulbs that cost about $15. Careful, you go through a lot of those when your not careful with handling them! Also, a heat rock is great for a belly heat for your lizard, because they need the extra heat to digest their food. These are $20-$30.
