Angel is a 241 year old vampire. In the early 1900's he bit a gypsy; the gypsy elders consequently punished him by restoring his soul, which he lost when he became a vampire. Because of this, he felt guilty for his murderous, vicious actions and no longer killed humans for blood. He resolved to help in the elimination of vampires and regularly helped Buffy and her friends. In the process, he fell in love with her. When Buffy and Angel made love, however, he was happy and content with his life for one moment, and consequently lost his soul. He then began killing Buffy's friends and returned to his old, vicious ways.
