Rupert Giles is Buffy's Watcher. It is the responsibility of the Watcher to train the Slayer in combat and weaponry tactics. He often prepares Buffy for what she will face by explaining foretold prophecies. Giles, as he is called by Buffy and her friends, also works as the librarian at Buffy's school. He loves books and research, shunning technology such as computers. Although Buffy's stubbornness and refusal to listen to his advice often puts them at odds, Giles cares deeply for her and considers her his responsibility.
