Outside, Looking Out

The girls all rush to the window. Five blonde pony-tails jocky for position, trying to see across the dusky courtyard and into the well-lit room full of boys.

I sit on the bottom bunk of the second bed from the door.

Giggling, one points to the silhouette of a boy who appears to be picking his nose. Laughter rings uproarious from the painted lips of the other four.

I wonder if the boys are this rowdy, mean-spirited, and rude.

Two of the girls, manicured fingers tipped with acrylic, demonstrate a complete lack of talent and tact as they act out being caught with their fingers up their noses. The other three remain glued to the window, oblivious to their slack jaws, watching the back-lit shadow of a young man undressing.

I begin to unpack my pajamas and toothbrush.

Screeches of embarassment rip through the room as three blonde heads whip around to pretend they were not staring at the boys who had just begun to stare back. The other two hardly notice as they are immersed in the tragedy of a broken nail.

I complete my personal hygiene and climb into my sleeping bag.

Four grils make a complete mess of an attempt to "casually" close the curtains against prying eyes as the fifth hysterically shouts encouragement. Language becomes rude when heads collide at the narrow break between curtains not quite wide enough for the window.

I close my eyes.

A voice calls out from the hall, "Lights out," and five exasperated sighs preceed frantic scufflings and soft curses.

I sleep.
