PRODUCE TIPS

Here are some tips for the freshest, appetizing, way to maintain some fruits and vegetables while enhancing their best appearance

APPLES

Rub cut apples with lemon juice to keep slices to keep them white for hours. Also keep apples stored in a plastic bag in the fridge away from foods that have strong odors. This will prevent flavor transfers

ASPARAGUS

Choose asparagus that has tender stalks that are nearly completely green. Avoid asparagus with wrinkled stalks and/or wilted tips

BASIL (Storing)

Temperatures below 48F. Will turn basil black. Use basil the same day you buy it, or put the stems into a glass of water like cut flowers. (DO NOT REFRIGERATE)

CAULIFLOWER

When boiling cauliflower, add a teaspoon of fresh lemon juice to the water to keep it white in color

CELERY

Try reviving limp celery that has been in the fridge too long by shaving a small amount off the butt end, soak in luke warm water for about 45 minutes and then refrigerating

BANANAS

To ripen green bananas, put into a plastic bag, seal, and place in a warm spot to help speed up the ripening process

LEMONS

Lemon juice can remove odors from your hands and cooking utensils. Rub with a lemon slice just before washing

MUSHROOMS

To clean mushrooms, wipe with a damp cloth or use a softy vegetable brush. They should not be washed in water because of their porous nature, it will cause mushrooms to lose their texture and flavor

POTATOES

Do NOT store potatoes in the refrigerator. This will cause the potatoes to darken when cooking

SPINACH

When washing spinach, add a small amount of salt to cold water. Swish around in water, transfer to a colander, rinse and drain quickly, pat dry

TOMATOES

For Best results, DO NOT refrigerate. If kept at room temperature, they will retain their flavor and ripen correctly

WATERMELON

With an open palm, slap a watermelon. A high pitched tone indicates that it is under-ripe, a deep-pitched sound indicates that the melon is ripe. Any dull sounds indicate over-ripeness.
