PUPPY LOVE

Written March 1995

All through the black, grimy corridors could be heard the sad cries of the prisoners, reminiscing about the happier days, the times when they were free. Some of them had been there for years, while others had just arrived. They constantly awaited the day that they would be released from this hell, but many of them knew that they may not live long enough to see that happen.

The dampness of their cells made them very uncomfortable, and their lack of daily showers made the place reek of body odor. They heard footsteps echoing off the confining walls. They heard the pounding repeat over and over in their ears. They saw the figure of the man who was responsible for putting them in here and keeping them in line. Alongside of him was another figure, much smaller than the first. They approached the cells, and the short figure peered between the bars with much interest. After he glanced into every cage, he finally spoke.

"I want that one," he said excitedly, pointing to one of the inmates.

"Good choice," said the man, reaching for his keys. He unlocked the cage and produced an extremely furry german shepherd to the young eight year old boy. Its fur was pitch black and fluffy. It had a long tail that couldn't seem to stop wagging at the moment. When the boy held it, the dog gave him a big lick on the cheek. The boy laughed and took the dog home.

"Here's where you'll be staying," the boy told his new friend as he pointed towards the doghouse. "Now, what should I name you?" He stared at his new pet as he pondered this question. He couldn't help but think about how dark black its fur was. Boy, was it black. It was the blackest dog that he had ever seen in his life. He couldn't imagine how any dog's fur could be blacker. The blackness of this dog was beyond belief. "Ah ha! I think I'll name you Blacky!"

"Ted, time for dinner!" the boy's mother bellowed from inside the house. Ted said goodbye for now to Blacky and went inside.

That night, just as the sun was disappearing over the horizon, a strange occurrence began to take place in the doghouse. The animal started to shake convulsively. It growled a little and actually started to grow larger. Its fur stood up on end and an evil look came into its eyes. It continued to grow. The walls of the doghouse began to bust out from the increasing pressure within. At the end of the seizure-like action, the once small and innocent dog had grown to a height of ten stories tall and weighed 100 tons. It was the most gruesome and ugly thing ever witnessed by human eyes. It stomped through the yard and out into the street.

The beast's thunderous footsteps woke up people all over the city. They opened their front doors to see what was causing the commotion, and quickly closed them again when they found out. Those who were already outside attempted to run from the monster--many became pancakes. The heavy stomping caused the earth to shake tremendously. The beast's drool made puddles on the ground wherever it fell, and unfortunate victims were found dead from drowning.

As the creature plodded along, it tore up trees and fences and Mrs. O'Leary's cow. The police station switchboard was jammed with numerous calls from hysterical people screaming at the top of their lungs for help. Anything the police tried to do failed. The creature continued its reign of destruction.

This mass hysteria went on all night. When the sun started to rise, the great monster began to howl. It began to shake again, just as it had when it grew to its present size. However, this time he began to shrink, and it eventually returned to its original size. The dog ran up to a man on the street, and the man immediately started to run. Blacky jumped on him, knocking him over, and gave the startled man a big toungy kiss on the face. He was back to his old, friendly self again.

The sheriff immediately seized the hound and checked its tags. He took it to Ted's house and told him what had happened. Of course, Ted was skeptical at first, but when he saw the huge paw prints in the backyard, he started to wonder what was going on. What was going on with his beloved pooch? How did something like this happen? He didn't have a clue.

Ted almost bawled to death when the sheriff told him that Blacky had to be put to sleep. He didn't want to lose someone who had just come into his life.

"You can't do that," he protested. "I love him. You can't kill him! You can't kill him!"

"It's our only choice," the sheriff replied, "We can't risk another occurrence like this again. People's lives are at stake here. You have to think about that, young man."

Ted knew he was right. He couldn't live with himself if people were killed because of his selfishness. He couldn't bear to watch Blacky be killed. He buried Blacky in his backyard, and cried over his grave.

That night at dusk, a huge earthquake rocked the small town. Buildings, at least the few that were left from the previous night's destruction, crumbled under the pressure. This was not a natural disaster, however. When Ted looked out his bedroom window, he saw a huge hole in the backyard where Blacky had been buried that very afternoon. It seemed that Blacky had come to life, and was back on the streets.

Ted quickly called the police, and they sent out warnings all over the television and radio waves. They told people not to panic, but, of course, they did. When people are told not to panic, it makes them realize that there is a problem and it naturally causes them to panic. They ran down to their basements and bomb shelters. One man, who was feeling extreme panic, locked himself in his chest freezer and never came out.

The monster came upon the property of Old Farmer Murdoch on the other side of town. It approached the barn and lifted its leg. It's not surprising that a dog that size could easily fill the barn in less than a minute. After it finished, it ran off. The next morning, Old Farmer Murdoch, who was hard of hearing, so therefore did not hear the commotion during the night, opened the barn doors and was immediately thrown back by the powerful current. He was never heard from again.

The Dogzilla creature tore through the downtown area and completely ripped the buildings apart. It picked up people by the handful and tossed them into its huge mouth. Hundreds of people were flattened and digested. Some of the townspeople thought they would take the situation into their own hands, and came charging at the beast with all kinds of weaponry. However, like the attempt by the police the night before, they failed miserably. They were killed as well. What once was a friendly, lovable pooch was now an unstoppable, sadistic killing machine. Perhaps the attempts to kill it angered it so much that it was now incapable of loving again.

Oddly enough, when the sun came up the next morning, the giant brutish mutt did not shrink as it had before. It now continued to destroy town after town both day and night. It traveled all across North America, plowing through everything and everybody in its path. No types of missiles could stop it. Nuclear bombs were even dropped on it, but it swatted at them as if they were flies. When it arrived in South America, it was becoming tired. It ate all the coffee beans and other products Colombia is famous for, and easily stayed awake.

It traveled across the ocean to Japan. People ran down the street screaming, "AHHHH! Godzilla has a brother!". The island country was soon underwater, as were all the other land masses that the rampage had consumed.

After terrorizing all of Asia and Europe, demoloshing Africa and making a popsicle out of Antarctica, it made its way to the land down under--Australia. It seemed that the land of kangaroos and koala bears was destined to join the rest of the world as part of the creatures seven-continent meal.

"Look out, mate!" a man yelled to his friend as the monstrous canine approached. The warning came too late, as he was crushed under the enormous paws. The son of the man who was still alive came out of the house with his little dart gun in hand. He ran toward the beast, thinking it was just a game. His father yelled out to him to come back, but the boy didn't hear him. The boy aimed the dart gun at the giant's head and fired. The dart hit the roof of its mouth, it screamed in pain, and collapsed to the ground with an enormous thud.

The boy and his father stood amazed. It shrunk back to its original size, let out a little puppy yelp, and died. The boy approached the dog and looked at it. The sun shone down on its mouth, and a light was reflected back. In the exact spot the dart hit the mutt, the boy found a small microchip imbedded into the creature's gums. The father removed the chip and saw an inscription.

"Made in Yugocheckoslovakistan, Mars," he read, "Wow, an alien computer chip. I'll bet that's what caused the dog to destroy Earth. Those damn Martians!"

Both father and son, who were now the only people left on the entire planet, tried to get on with their lives. However, about a week later, they were abducted by the very same Martians who implanted the chip into Blacky, and were forced to be slaves for the planet's ruler. They worked long and hard, day after day. Eventually, they decided they couldn't go on with it anymore, so they slit their necks and became the main course for the aliens at dinner that night.
