Hailuoto

Our first trip outside of Oulu was our excursion to Hailuoto Island as part of the university's international student orientation. We continued during the semester to travel throughout Finland and Scandinavia, on our own or with classes, by bus, train, boat, foot, or (in extreme cases) bicycle.
We took a ferry to Hailuoto. This was the only ferry I rode on, during my entire stay in Europe, on which I did not feel sick.
During our stay at Hailuoto, we participated in orientation activities such as taking a tour of the island, tasting Salmiakki (Finnish candy which tastes like licorice with salt, tar, and tire rubber), naming famous Finns, and trying to draw a map of Finland from memory.
This is the lighthouse on Hailuoto.
After lunch, we relaxed with a campfire, makkara (Finnish sausage), and sauna.
