Dear Friends & Family!

A belated Merry Christmas & Happy Y2K!! I must admit, I've not been motivated to sit down & write--lack of time due to overbooking (my conscious excuse), plus exhaustion and perhaps a general fin de siècle malaise. We've been thinking of our friends often especially during these days, intending to write a holiday greeting. I finally took Marian's standard advice to "just do it!" So here it is.

School News

We've had--as you all have had--quite a busy year. It's New Year's Day and I have to sit down to correct school papers that have been piling up over the last weeks of school. During that time I successfully :-) completed the requirements for my 5th course (the halfway point!!) in my pastoral ministry Park Ridge HS certification program, while contending with increasingly rebellious adolescents in this my 25th year of teaching at Park Ridge HS. "How long, O Lord, how long?!!!" This was a very needed--but much too short!--break from that routine. 3 more years until I'm 55 and eligible for retirement w/out penalty. Will I make it? At least I have a full class load for German, with 36 students in two 1st year classes. And just got in the course sign up for next year's 7th grade: 26--7 more than this year! :-)

Marian has decided that next school year will be her last. Our mortgage will be paid off and she'll have taught 33 years. She's in a period of discernment, sensing it's time for something new. And with the mandatory elementary language requirement in NJ being implemented in most districts as "Spanish only," the future doesn't look too good for the other languages by the time these kids reach H.S. Another reason to start considering our options! In the meantime we've started to "update" our home decor for the first time since we moved in here 16 years ago, hoping to finish before retirement.

Summer

We had a wonderful summer--I w/ students on our exchange program in Germany for 3 weeks, then 10 great days in France w/Marian & four other very patient friends. College of St Elizabeth We spent a week in a rented villa in the Dordogne--magnifique!!! A week at the shore in Rehoboth DE topped it off, then we were back in school. For us both returning was the most difficult readjustment we can remember. September was cheered up by a visit from our new French "daughter." We met her at the first reunion with my French family, with whom I spent the summer 25 years ago. That was a very special "highlight!"

Coming Up

In addition to continuing our usual routine of teaching, attending workshops and supervising our student activities, I'll be taking the next course at College of St. Elizabeth, singing in church choir and also accompanying Marian & her students during a week in France this coming April.

Then in July we'll be guiding an adult tour bus for 2 weeks from Budapest via Vienna & Prague to Bavaria, where we'll also see the Oberammergau Passion Play. Of course we'll try to stay longer to visit friends and get some more "French time" in for Marian, and then end the summer again in Rehoboth DE.

Keeping in Touch

It was great to hear from so many of you this Oberammergau holiday season, with several updates about your lives. These letters not only keep us current but also help us to focus on the good things that we have, putting the daily stresses aside for a while. Thanks for thinking of us! And for those outside metropolitan NYC, please remember that we're only 20 miles from the city and have room for a few visitors if you're coming to the area. We'd love to catch up in person!! Write to us meanwhile.

Take care and know that we wish you a safe and healthy 2000!
