Casino!

Last update February 5, 2000

Late at night, while the world is preparing for bed, I sneak off to the gaming rooms to play with people I have come to know very well online, even a relative now and then. This is after work, housekeeping, writing code for webpages, answering email, etc. Find me at interBet Casinos and occasionally at GameStorm. I'll be looking for you!

lep We're at interBet now!

Many, many of us are at interBet Casinos now, although I have seen many in GameStorm and hear that several are in The Zone. And even they stop into interBet to touch base with the granddaddy of them all, the veterans of AOL poker.

One thing that all interBet players can relate to is that little fellow up there, the Leprechaun! There is a very popular (and expensive with $25 coins) Slot game called Pot Luck. It's very simple ... you get 5 Leps, you win $1,000,000. Those tables were PACKED for months on 10 floors. It was not often that they hit, but the fame of having hit 5 Leps was worth it! And a peculiar playoff contest that came to be was the Slot War. When the call was made by a Pitboss for a Slot War, players left all other games and tables and raced over to grab a seat. That contest generated an awful lot of richness ... and poverty, LOL.

There are many millionaires in interBet now .... here are the ways they do it. You can accidentally hit a lucky seat in any of the games, play a card or pull a handle, and get a Jackpot. You can play a new Slots game called Munchies, where you are guaranteed a win in about 2.5 hours by getting 50,000 points ... you can play this game again and again, and some people do. The JPs are randomly set, so you could get $16,000 or $942,000, depending on when your JP hits. The strategy to this is to not pull the handle for the last time until some innocent newcomer has pulled off the tiny JP and a new, large JP comes up. And here's the biggest way to become a millionaire, which has been done since the free games began online. You take a conspirator to a 7-Card Stud table. They raise and raise and raise throughout the hand with you, driving up the pot. At the last card, they fold and you win maybe $1,000 a hand. The conspirator keeps going to the Loan Office, in interBet it is called "Harold", to refresh their bankroll. The name that this conspirator plays under is heavily in debt ... but who cares??? The Pitbosses in interBet try to bust these 2-player scams up, but it is a never-ending battle, LOL. By the way, we know who these people are, and we despise them for cheating!

A fabulous intermediary step between AOL poker and interBet or GameStorm was a place called Sierra or Hoyle Poker. The great features about Sierra were: the ability of the Game Master (person sitting in top left seat) to right-click and oust a player from the room (never saw it abused, only used to get rid of locked players or r/f'ers), to view the Lobby to see who had come on and who was in each room and at which table, table only chat, and the ability to recruit for players in the Lobby while at the table.

Believe me when I say there were a LOT of friendships made there! Serenity used to keep a running show going in the lobby chat that was a laugh a minute! She tried to stop her online girlfriend from going off with slimy characters who wanted to perform Cybersex. Her friend always appeared to be filthy drunk .. and always went anyway! It was hilarious. There was one night that a real Don Juan was trying to stop his Sierra lover from leaving him for another. No poker was played that night, LOL. Hundreds of players just sat there laughing themselves silly as the menage a trois battled it out, tooth and nail, no secrets held back, a Death Match! And there was, of course, Driver45, who claimed to be Reba McIntire's driver. Hands down, he was the most charming person I and many others came across. He would have a flame at the table, but send a secret message to another woman, saying " I love you". He would write, "You intrigue me." He would ask if he should be getting jealous if a woman got {{{{{{{{ HUGS }}}}}}}}} from another man. A million tricks ... and they all worked, LOL!

There was an especially moving night in Sierra. It was the night Princess Diana died. As a preface, you should know that most players have the TV on while they play, often tuned to sports channels. That night, it was the late news hour, and players started reporting that Diana had been in an accident in Paris. Other players verified it by switching to CNN. It was the talk of the game room. Finally, one misguided fool reported that she had died. No! Yes. No!!!! Yes. Everyone switched to CNN. It was true. We all stayed together from 11:00 PM till 5:00 AM, watching, reporting, crying, providing solace ... it was truly a magic online moment.

interBet and GameStorm, please take a good look at the beginning of this story. Is there anyway you can incorporate some of these features into your games? The recruiting, the juicy lobby stuff, the Game Master, etc.? It might be worth your while.

Where else could we laugh like crazy for hours on end? Where else do they say NH, VNH, G1, LMAO, PMP, puuurrrrrrrrrr, ROOOOAAARRR, ROFLMAOPMPTIME? Who else understands that? . . ."

I wrote back: "I feel exactly the same way ... devastated. Please put something recognizable in your name in case I run across you elsewhere. I'll be sure to put < something > prominently in mine. I'm sure we will meet again. You know, Sony.com has Chat and Buddies! I'll probably also stop into Sierra.com for free poker as long as it lasts. I also can't believe they went through with this. It is a very, very sad day ... an end of a wonderful era that I'll remember all my life. And thank you soooooo much for the part you played in showing me that there is fun online ... I never knew before. I care deeply too and will miss some absolutely wonderful people. The nice thing is, you and I and many others always realized there were real people behind those screen names, right? Right now I have an email box at "mariapia@oocities.com". I am going to cancel AOL this moment (we must follow through, you know). Please keep in touch whenever you can ... and I really mean it. Love ...."

You know, we never thought we could go on, recapture the fun. Have we???? Are you an alumnus of that experience? Do you have a story about the closing, the boycotts, the rumors, the painful transition, or a successful transition? Give me your name and I'll put you here . . . under "AOL Alumni"!

lep Love Online - He

There are different kinds of love. The boy-girl kind happened to me in another game room less than a year ago, although it seems like years. I can't remember time before him. There are so many milestones in my life I wish he had shared. We try to catch up on all of them and bring each other into the big moments in our lives. Fortunately, that will take a very long time.

He is my best friend. We correspond as much as is humanly possible, sometimes taking large risks, many times not being able to "be there" with each other or for each other at big moments, but sharing them as soon as we can. We think we love each other, but we can't be absolutely sure just yet.

When someone wakes the sleeping beauty in you, male or female, that is a very attractive thing. All of a sudden, there is beauty everywhere. You start reading poetry, for crying out loud! Landscape is beautiful ... children are gorgeous ... skin is luscious ... showers are luxurious ... new lingerie ... creativity awakens ... inspiration abounds. What is this called? We call it love. I will keep you posted.

candleGameroom - 1

My beloved sister was such a loser in these game rooms, I felt sorry for her ... even though she was the one who got me into AOL for the express purpose of playing Poker, particularly Texas Holdem. Oh, she worked on me for weeks to get me in there.

So finally, there I am, finding my way around, figuring how to play the games, learning who the players were and how they bet. And most importantly amassing a nice little purse! Meanwhile, I am making fabulous acquaintances, preferring the upbeat and chatty people. I was too unfamiliar to venture out of Texas, so I very happily stayed there with the same people.

Once in awhile, my sister would stop in, each time with no money! She started playing before me and here I was with 10s of thousands and she never had more than $2,500. Finally, I asked her why she never seemed to make money. It was easy enough to do ... just don't bet foolishly and never raise on two pairs, except maybe at the very end. She answered that she liked to play "raise/fold" games. Oh, how we hated those players, LOL, playing that mindless raise-raise-raise game. Some people made money that way, like ICEMAN4110, but it was very rare. Most of them were always hitting the ATM for another $500.

Then one day, out of utter pity, I took my sister into an empty room to give her money. We played about 20 games where we would raise and raise all the way around, making sure the shills were out of it, and then I would fold. I gave her a few thousand, because we had to stop from laughing so hard.

Guess what? A couple hours later we ran into each other and she had .... no money! She had gone in r/f games and proceeded to lose it all. Now what do you think of that???

artist Ward Ryan, sonyman@best.com Love Online - She

In a game room online over a year ago, I met a girl. She already had a group of regulars around her. The fascination was her hilarity, outgoingness, ability to include anyone, never an unkind word -- just plain happiness all the time. She was someone you wanted to be around. And she collected the very nicest and most fun people. You never got tired of her. We all actually loved her!

One day, the game room (her picture is here, I'm thrilled that I found it) closed for good. We were all numb, searching for another place to meet, wanting to regroup. We were sure we could maintain our friendships. At the same time, we were not certain we could find a place, or that our fun was transportable. All of us searched and kept reporting possibilities to each other.

It finally occurred to me that I wasn't seeing that girl around. Her endless stream of the greatest jokes in the world -- five, ten emails a day! -- had stopped. I inquired. Someone was kind enough to tell me the truth. She went away for awhile, getting things straightened out. OMG, she was in need, and who helped her? Was she still the same? Who loved her now? Lots of people, I hoped.

I have since seen her here and there. She doesn't know what my screen name is now, and she doesn't hang around long, must have a new group of friends. All I know is that I will always love her. And she taught me that you can really love online.

Who is this girl? What game room? When did it close?
