    Let's face it this is a reason a lot of you have dropped by.  That's fine.  This is why it is here to give you some help.  Sometimes people don't want to ask questions in channel because they might feel "dumb". Sometimes they figured You know I've asked them 4 times already and I still don't get it.  That's ok. Here is another place to come and have a look at those things you want to learn and hopefully it will help get you up to speed.  Consider it a little mIRC tutorial :)  If  you are still having problems after reading this.  Don't be afraid to dcc me in the lounge and ask for help.  This is what I am there for.  Also remember I had to learn all this stuff too and it didn't come easy to me either.  I am a self taught computer user.

Welcome to mIRC, everybody is playing noises and you can't hear a darned thing!! You are upset because you know you have an expensive sound card and now it's not working.  These instructions are given for the newest Mirc program version 5.4.  I am assuming you have the latest version, if not you might want to download it.

Setting up your sound inside Mirc:

Open up your mirc program click on file
select options
click on the sound tab check off all the blank boxes in the menu
 in bottom 2 boxes they are asking where you want your sound files as to be housed
within your computers files.  It should say c:\mirc\sound if you are using the
current version. And that is where all your sounds are going to be sent to.

How do I get those sounds to play in channel?

First things first. In order to hear sounds on Mirc you must have them in your computer. This is the easy part kids. In the lounge everybody likes to share.  What is the point of keeping sounds to yourself. We want everybody to hear us scream and rock on!  In the main channel lie in wait until somebody plays something that looks interesting then type the following:
!nickname. filename.wav and the file should be automatically sent to you.

for example

Nurse-mac plays 007.wav
you will see a message in blue [007.wav not found] it just means you don't have it yet!!
so you type !nurse-mac 007.wav
Guess what my computer will send it to you!!  And your computer is going to store it in the right place.  This transfer of files might take a few minutes but that is the way of the net.
 Also next time i play the wave 007.wav u will see [sound] better yet you will also hear it :)
You will also see  people using wave players and mp3 players.  I don't cover these things here because they are add-ons for the program.  My thoughts are master the basics before you load things like players.  But they are great fun when you are ready to move on.

Hints and Tips, Troubleshooting

So you have filled your first popup menu and now you are in a slight panic because you want to make more popups! Create a text file by opening up a notepad and putting all your current popups in there.  You can load and unload these files from your popup menu as you please.  Change them around, easily cut and paste and create more new files.  You may want to run more then one popup file simultaneously.   You can,  you need to change the format of your popups files and use them in remotes. This section is a bit tricky but once u get the hand of it isn't a snap. I strongly do not recommend this for newbies.   Before you start save your current popup files to disk!!
Start you new file like this for example:
menu nicklist {
-
name of file (nm1.txt)
copy your   popup file here (note you may find you need to change the number of ... after your popups in order for them all to appear in this menu)
close your popup file with
on a separate line at the bottom!
Now load this file into your remotes menu.  If  you made the mistake of leaving anything in you nicklist popup menu.  It is either gone or partially missing at this point.  That's because you are no longer using the nicklist popup menu. But the advantage is you can run more then one popup file off your computer and when u click right as you usually do for popups you now show more then one popup file.  You are going to have to play with the indentations you have placed in your popups files in order to make this work. But if are this far ... I know you can do it :) So watch those period markings :)

Other common  problems

Sometimes when you pull them out of a notepad we also end up copying the line number from the notepad i.e. 150=etc. Sometimes u need to remove the 150= in order to get the   popups to work!
Check those little dots.  I don't know how many times I have just showed up one complete line in the place where my popups used to be.  It's because I deleted a (.) somewhere along the line.  Just replace that little indent (.) and you life should be peachy again.

They won't give me those popups I want and I asked nicely too.
Try one of 2 things:
Complicated and messy:
Directly snatch it from channel with the good old copy and paste, and spend eons putting it  together or
Lazy man's method keep channel logs and as soon as you leave the channel go into the logs and open the logs with a notepad and copy the popup.  This usually allows you to get the popup intact with the colors and works. Good luck with this either method can be a challenge and requires patience.
I got so much stuff in popups I don't know what to do with it.  Maybe try converting some of them to aliases files. The beauty of mirc is you can carry more then 1 alias file and remote file, but your popup menu is limited to 3000 bytes. Tinker and back up everything, it can be done.
Remember those that create unique popups aren't likely to share those they made.  Appreciate the fact that the person has spent sometimes hours creating the graphics that look simple to you.  They are not simple, but certainly a challenge for anyone with the creativity to do it!

Happy Popup Hunting!!

How to access the pop up menu and what is inside it
Go to the 8th icon from the left it has 3 little pieces of paper on it, this is your pop up menu.
Click on it.
Click on View, u will see status, query, channel, nickname list (these are the 4 main places that u can load pop ups)
status = pop commands u might frequently use in your status window. Ie. NickServ, MemoServ and ChanServ commands
Query = pop ups that you can use in your private / dcc chat menu
Nicklist = are where all the goodies lay that you would use in the main channel
I am going to skip the review of colours because the new est version of mIRC has a popup Menu as soon as u punch in a colour code with Ctrl K
coloured text = ctrl k # from (1 - 15)
coloured background = ctrl k #,#
bold text = ctrl b
underlined text = ctrl u
plain text = ctrl o
all these things can be used in combination to create popups i.e..
Ctrl ubk13,5 hello ctrluk13,5 how are u today? =

hello how are u today?
What an alias script can do for a pop up?
All an aliases script is, is a command line from another menu that creates special graphics through a command such as /ctt. These can be used in combination with your popups. If you don't have any of these ask. I am sure someone like me has a few lying around they can send to u to use. The are found under the icon 7th from the left , conveniently right beside your popups and accessible when u select that aliases tab in your popup menu.

How to copy and paste from the main channel
this is for win95 only!!
Take you mouse and place it over the line u want to copy, click on it and hold down that click and drag it the length of line u want. It should all highlight , keep that click held down until u get to the end of the line or graphic u want to copy, then let go. Now click right right with your mouse and select copy. (all the highlight is going to disappear - don't be alarmed) I usually directly go to my pop up menu or to a notepad at this point. The click right on your mouse and u will see the paste option..
Line up your mouse onto the new spot and select paste by clicking right…. presto..what u just collected will reappear.
At this point u have just the outline of the pop up or graphic, no colours yet. Those u can add in yourself. Caution your ctrl b and k do not work in notepad. U will have to copy a ctrl b and k over from your popup menu into notepad if u plan on doing this in notepad. I usually collect them
in a notepad and when I work on them put them into the bottom of my pop up menu to colorize them. It is just easier.

How to create those fancy letters and stuff

There are several ways to create those fancy letters and stuff.

Easy way
If u see something you like in the main channel copy and paste it into a note pad and save it for a rainy day when u feel like making popups. Use the symbols and numbers on your keyboard to create some basic special effects.

More difficult
If u have something like microsoft word and publisher u can go into your fonts and take out neat symbols you would like to use. Hunt out your character map in your computer there is one in there somewhere. Learn how to access your ASCII codes they are in your hard drive somewhere
Other sources of neat stuff to steal are the other channels on dalnet and on other parts of the net. Check out those pop up and scripting channels you will be surprised what there is around to borrow with copy and paste.

How to log a channel and save those neat things u see there?
To log your channels and private chats do this:
go to file, options, logging and turn on these options. I would suggest u set up another file to put this stuff in and as it piles up fairly fast. Now if u see neat popups that u have logged. Immediately on leaving that channel go into that log and put them into a note pad, this way u save all the color codes etc. It can be messy sometimes. Sometimes u have to go and remove a couple of lines of chatter in order to get the complete pop up !
Now that I got all this neat stuff how do I make it work?
Okay a basic pop up looks like this:
.fly:/me flies $$1 across the room at 100 miles an hour!!!
.fly: tell u the name of that particular pop up and tells your computer.
Hey I am supposed to do something with what comes after the :
/me is a familiar action command and even in pop ups when u use /me it is going to be colored purple unless u go in there and tell it to do something else many times u will see pop ups written that have lines in them that say /say or /ctt it is just what u are telling the program to do.
/say u see this used frequently especially when u are using pop that are multiple
/ctt is an alias file u might see in a command line that tells the program u are using a fancy script for this pop up
| is a break line that tells the computer this is the end of the line,
used when u want to add another command or another line at the end of your pop up.
$$1 symbol tell your computer which nick u are going to click on and have fly across the room
For example:
.fly:/me flies $$1 across the room at 100 miles an hour!!!!! | /sound speed.wav
what I have done is tell the program to play the wave at the end of the popup. This works well at the end especially if u have an alias script file attached at the beginning.
i.e..
.fly:/ctt me flies across the room at 100 miles an hour!!!!! | /sound speed.wav
or
.fly:/sound speed.wav ctrlbk 4,8 me flies across the room at 100 miles
an hour!!!!!

.fishbanner:/say 12likes to swim like a fish with 4 *1
Trickier!!
Those 5 line pop ups and bigger graphics u see in channel
.ie would look like this in channel:
-----------------> SAM
---------------> SAM
-------------> SAM
----------> SAM
--------> SAM
this is what this would look like in your pop up menu:
.arrow:/say 13-----------> *1 | /me 12----------> *1 | /me 11---------> *1 | /me 10--------> *1 | /me 9------->*1

Quick tips that I use:
Lots of patience, it can take up to 5 hours to put some of these pop ups together.Practice makes perfect and you learn by trail and error lots of times. Find a little room of your own to play with your new creations away from the crowd, it does get real messy sometimes! Complicated pop ups I put into the bottom of my pop up menu and I rebuild them line by line. If u find u need to indent that pop up with dots u might want to hide that code…use ctrlk 1,1 and code becomes invisible.  I also keep a note pad of building blocks handy with scripts on that I have stolen out of the channel. I frequently use then to build pop ups. I also collect any pop ups that are offered to me. You never know when they might come in handy. I also keep all those little extras on disk. It is amazing how fast the pile of pop ups can build up.

Happy Popup Making!!!
