The Islands

I have been to Nassau twice, and have been disappointed both times. The people don't really like tourists, especially American tourists, but it may be one of the most beautiful places ever. Jamaica, on the other hand, has some of the most gracious and friendly people I have ever met, and it also is gorgeous. Also, for coffee lovers, it has the best coffee in the world...Jamaican Blue Mountain. Worth the cost of the trip all by itself. Our last trip to the islands was a three island trip, and I wasn't disappointed in any of them. Puerto Rico is friendly and beautiful, and in spite of the resident's many different hues, there appears to be no racial strife at all. In addition, for history buffs, Old Town, where Cristopher Colombus landed, is well preserved and very interesting. St. Thomas also has friendly people, and if you go there, ask for a cab driver named Elvis(honest) who is the only safe driver on the island. The shopping is great. Gold, crystal, china and diamonds are duty free and much less expensive than other places. Stay alert, though. There are hustlers in every country, even exotic ones. St. John has a place called Trunk Bay, which is on the list as one of the most beautiful beaches in the world, and it is. Megan's Bay in St. Thomas is also on that list, but it is so polluted with tourists that it is impossible to tell what it looks like. Like Siskel and Ebert, I give all islands mentioned except Nassau 2 thumbs up...way up.
