Even when the victim plunged through the open trap, to his death, cheers of delight echoed through the crowd. The bloodlust of the crowd amazed the authorities. It didn't work as a deterrent, but just became a gruesome funfair. Twentieth Century man can be seen to have advanced no further than the mobs of Ancient Rome who watched gladiators hack each other to pieces, or medieval folk viewing one of their brethren kicking and thrashing as they dangle from a gibbet in the village square.
