Home of Tarsus American School
Tarsus is in southern Turkey between Adana and the port city of Mersin, and situated on the Cilican Plain with the Taurus Mountains to the north and teh warm blue Mediterranean Sea to the South.
The city of about 170.000 still mountains many picturesque customs and values. For instance, hot tea is ritually served year round by shop keepers and in homes; the school has morning and afternoon tea breaks. Active both in agricultural and light industry, Tarsus is a center important for cotton, wheat, citrus fruit, vegetables. We eat well in Icel Province!
Ancient history of Tarsus dates from neolithic times, through the Hitites, and progress beyond the Roman era. Alexander the Great, Marc Antony, Cleopatra, and St.Paul have walked Tarsus streets. Since ages ago it has been an important center of learning with one of the world's largest libraries. Within walking distance of the town center are Cleopatra's Gate, Gozlu Kule - the Great Mound of Tarsus, St. Pauls Well, and a little further, Justinians Bridge, and the Donuk Tas (Frozen Stone.)
Potpourri: Southern Turkey, from Antakya in the east and along the Turquise Coast toward Antalya is "people country": safe for enjoyable walking, touring, and travelling. Tarsus, weatherwise: winters are mild, seldom below freezing with no snow, but with a coastal cold.
Summer is hot and dusty, but cool Taurus Mountain retreats are only two hours away and Meditarranean beaches beckon as well! The coast living is much less than the cities of Ankara, Izmir , or Istanbul. Tranportation is by bus, dolmus (a minibus system), train, and with air connections in Adana. Turkish cuisine is varied and tasty: kebabs and meat dishes, delicious breads and pastries, all kinds of vegetables, fruits, drinks and beverages.
Come to Tarsus- a unique and special adventure - wher daily life rubs shoulders with yesterday's, and whispers "enjoy!"
