REASONS WHY THE UNIVERSAL CHURCH IS UNSCRIPTURAL

1. The word "church" comes from the Greek word "ekklesia", which means a called out assembly or congregation.  The ekklesia or church described in the Bible is a visible congregation and it has a particular location. The so called "Universal Invisible Church" is contrary to the true meaning of the word "church".  The definition of the Universal Invisible church is, "it composed of all the saved of all ages" and that it is invisible and without a particular location.  Whereas, the true church  has a location and is visible.  (Ps.22: 22; Heb.2: 12; Col.1: 2; I Cor.16: 19).

2. The word "universal" comes from the Greek word "Katolikos", which means "worldwide; universal".  The Roman Catholic Church believes in the universal visible church.  When the Protestants came out from the Roman Catholic Church, they carried the idea of the universal church but developed it into the invisible church idea.

3. All who were saved from the time of Adam to our time belong to the Family of God.  Saved people who were Scripturally baptized and added to the church founded by Christ are members of both the Family of God and the Church of God.  The Family of God is composed of all the saved of all ages whereas the church of God is a congregation composing of Scripturally baptized believers who have covenanted together to worship and execute the Lord's commission (Eph.3: 15; John 1: 12; Acts 2: 41-47; Matt.28: 18-20).

4. Christ built His church during His earthly ministry not Pentecost. (Matt.4: 18-22; I Cor.1: 28; Luke 6: 13- 14).  Therefore the universal church is left baseless without a founder.

5. There is no reason for Christ to found a universal church for it is without purpose. Christ founded a local visible New Testament church so that believers could worship him in the truth, fellowship and edify one another, observe His ordinances, and do his mission (Eph.4: 16, John.4: 23-24; Heb.10: 24-25; Mat.26:26-30; 28: 18-20)

6. Christ cannot be the founder of two kinds of churches opposing each other, nor founded various kinds of churches.  He is the founder of His church, Matt.16: 18).

7. No time and place of foundation.  Those who believe in the universal church idea are confused and cannot explain when the universal church was founded and where.  Some say "…at the time of Adam" while others say "…at Pentecost".

8. Christ is not the head of two kinds of bodies, local and universal. Christ is the head of His true church (Col.1: 18).

9. The universal church is said to be the "body of Christ" as termed by Protestants but it is a divided and functionless body.  (I Cor.12: 24). Therefore it is not analogous to the word "body" because a body is well organized and functional. The word "body" is an analogy of the local church because they can function as one body.

10. The universal church is not united in faith and practice. There is schism, I Cor.12: 25; Eph.4: 5.

11. The universal church is being compared to a house or building but it is a functionless building for the materials are not "fitly framed together"  but scattered.  The universal church is not analogous to the word "temple", "house", or "building" (I Tim.3: 15, Eph.2: 20-22). The words "house, temple, and building" are exactly symbolizing the local church whose members are "fitly framed together" (Eph.2: 20-22) in one faith and fellowship.

12. The universal church cannot be compared to "the wife" mentioned in Eph.5: 23, which was used as an analogy of the church.  The Universalists believe that the word "the church" in Eph.5: 23 has reference to the universal church because they say it is singular.  However the use of the word is generic or institutional sense.  An example of this is, "The school is a learning institution".  It does not mean that there is a huge mystical invisible school. Rather, it is applicable to all schools.  When Paul said, "For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church" (Eph.5: 23), he did not mean that there is an invisible church for the word "wife" does not mean that there is a huge invisible wife.

13. The doctrine of the universal church idea is the heart and the main reason for ecumenism. (Gal.5: 9).

14. It tends toward ecumenism and false kind of unity. The prayer of Jesus in John 17 is unity in the truth. Ecumenism is unity in diversity. True love does not rejoice in iniquity, I Cor.13: 6.

15. It tolerates false teachings and promotes heresies. (I Tim.6: 3; 2 Tim.4: 2-4; Titus 3: 10)

16. It does not practice church discipline (Mat.18: 15-17).

17. A church that believes in the universal church idea has departed from the faith or right doctrines and cannot preserve "the faith once delivered to the saints" (Jude 3-4: I Tim.4: 1-4).

18. The universal church idea is one big reason why pastors welcome all sorts of heresies into his church through their ecumenical fellowship.

19. Those who believe in the universal church idea tends to yoke with professing Christians who preach a false gospel or social gospel and are still in darkness ( II Cor.6: 14-18; Gal.1: 6-9)

20. The universal church idea minimizes the importance of the local church (Eph.5: 29; 3: 10; Heb.10: 25; Rev.2: 7) and makes free lancer Christians. Thus making believers unsafe from various kinds of false doctrines taught by churches founded by men. I Tim.4: 16.
